The Love Within is a program that moves through the inner landscapes of the heart—its longing, its turbulence, its memory, and ultimately its capacity for renewal. Through song, this evening traces how love reveals itself: quietly, insistently, and sometimes in disguise.

Performed by Canadian soprano Jonelle Sills, alongside pianist Tina Chang, the program brings together works that span time, language, and emotional worlds. From the lyrical intimacy of Franz Schubert’s lieder to the dreamlike textures of Claude Debussy, the contemporary resonance of Maria Thompson Corley, and the wit and theatricality of William Walton, each set offers a distinct perspective on love’s many forms.

The program unfolds across four curated sets:

Schubert: Love’s Journey A selection of iconic lieder including Gretchen am Spinnrade, Ständchen, and Der Tod und das Mädchen, where desire, innocence, and mortality intertwine.

Debussy: Proses lyriques A cycle of impressionistic songs that blur the boundaries between dream and reality, language and sensation.

Maria Thompson Corley: The Colour of Joy A contemporary song cycle that reflects on identity, transformation, and the emotional textures of joy.

Walton: Three Façade Settings Sharp, playful, and rhythmically alive, these works bring a sense of theatrical wit to close the evening.

Across these works, The Love Within invites audiences into an intimate listening experience—one that reflects the many ways love shapes us, from the tender to the tumultuous. It is an evening that holds space for reflection, connection, and the quiet recognition of our shared emotional lives.
